National Secretary;
The FSSAA National Swimming Secretary is Sam Morris. Sam is based at Newquay Fire Station in Cornwall and is currently putting together the next National Championships. On Behalf of the FSSAA Swimming Section she would like to invite all Fire and Rescue Service members to compete in the forthcoming competition and thank all the brigades who have competed and been involved with the Swimming section for the past number of years. The FSSAA National Swimming Championships,
Hereford and Worcester FRS, June 2010.
On Saturday 26th June, Worcester Swimming pool and Hereford and Worcester FRS played host to this years Nationals by kind permission of C.F.O Mark Yates. A total of 16 brigades made up of 58 swimmers from around the UK entered on the day in open, masters, individual and relay events. For the third year running the championships attracted a record number of new female swimmers, with some age categories newly contested.
The event was opened by Area Manager Paul Amos of Hereford & Worcester FRS and section chair Ted Simpson of Cornwall FRS. Throughout the competition 29 championship records were broken and 22 fire service records. The biggest event as usual was the 50m freestyle, receiving 35 male entries & 17 female entries. The closest individual event of the morning session was the open 100m butterfly; Rhys Smith, South Wales FRS (1.04.1) just touching out Stuart Trees, West Yorkshire (1.04.22) to Gold, followed by the females Janine Culley, London (1.15.31) just holding off Sam Morris, Cornwall (1.15.66). There were close relay battles in the male 4 x 25m medley relay between West Midlands (1.00.6) and Leicester (1.00.78) and then again in the mixed 4 x 25m medley relay between Nottinghamshire (1.09.7) and London (1.09.87). In the afternoon session the open 100m freestyle was closely contested by Chris McCabe (55.97) and Stuart Trees (56.17) both of West Yorkshire and then Sam Morris (1.06.11) and Marianne Gerety, Dorset (1.06.38).
The presentation was held at H&W FRS Headquarters and made by Mark Yates and Ted Simpson. The overall results & championship trophies were awarded to Stuart Trees (West Yorkshire) Men's Open Champion, Sam Morris (Cornwall), Women's Open Champion. Graeme Milne (Cornwall) & Biz Barrell (London) tied on points to win Men's Masters Champion & Joanne Wade; newcomer from Strathclyde FRS won Women's Masters Champion. London F.B won the Open & Masters Team Trophies.

Congratulations to our FRS swimmers, Chris Aust, Andy Ball, Paul Hembrow, Charlotte James, Sam Morris, James Bainbridge, Chris Goddard & Karen Jennings for their fantastic achievements in the British Gas ASA Masters and Senior Age Group Championships 23rd-25th Oct. Medalists were Chris Aust - gold 50m breastroke (29.39), silver 100 I.M (59.98) & 2 bronze 50m fly (26.32) & 200m free (1:58.63). Paul Hembrow - gold 1500m free (17:13.76), bronze 400m free (4:15.74) & bronze 200m fly (2:18.69). Karen Jennings - gold 400m free (5:09.45), 2 silver 800m free (10:40.45) & 1500m free (20.28.81). To claim new records please contact Sam You will need to provide evidence such as a card, results sheet, website link etc. Any records achieved outside of FSSAA competition are subject to ratification by the National Swimming Section. Masters records must be achieved in a masters event or age group. Open records can be achieved in any open or masters event. Records will be accepted from 2006 onwards providing swimmer was a member of FSSAA at the time.
